GIVENCHY BY THE STUDIO PRÉT-À-PORTER FEMME

Seduction is a game of subtlety. Within her instinctive elegance, the Givenchy woman charges her wardrobe with sensuality and suspense and defies the expectations of dress codes. For Fall Winter 2024, the Studio Prêt-à-Porter Femme captures the playful and provocative sides to the femininity at the heart of the Maison. Through a contemporary conversation with the archives of Hubert de Givenchy, the collection illuminates the flirtatious and suggestive aspects of the muses who inspired the founder, and projects them in the present-day character of his enduring Parisienne. Staged in the salons of 3, Avenue George V, the proposition reflects on the elements of drama and surprise woven into the Maison’s tapestry of elegance.

Givenchy Fall Winter 2024 Womenswear Collection

In the practice of Hubert de Givenchy, the subtext behind his graceful exteriors is most often implied within the gestures of his cuts: alluring necklines, bold draping, eccentric volumes. Elevating undertones into overtones, the collection projects these elements – largely native to eveningwear – into daywear silhouettes reflected in the wardrobe mentality of today. It is rendered in a cinematic palette observant of the Parisian taste for wearing black with navy and electrified by the founder’s beloved sapphire. Graphic and pure archive necklines become the focal points of day dresses constructed with cut-glass collars, bustier dresses with hirondelle décolletages, and leather and velvet bustiers and dresses with necklines tied up in rigid petal-shaped bows, a motif which reverberates throughout the collection.

As a counterpart to the necklines, dramatic draping sculpts sensual basque silhouettes – which also appear as magnified knits – as well as little black bustle dresses and the architectonic lines of miniskirts. The language of form echoes in coats and cabans cut with beetle-backs or scooped trapeze volumes, and circular-cut coats and wraps in faux fur. The shapes invoke the grammar of haute couture likewise exercised in jackets and raised-shoulder blazers structured with dégagé pockets, in wingback tuxedo coats and lustred alpaca overcoats, and tailcoats transmuted into cabans. Trousers adapt the collection’s lines in wide silhouettes with hems gesturally cut as if they were tucked into the shoe, and jodhpurs with kick-back cutaway ankle contours.

A suggestive sensibility is illustrated in the tactility of textures and surface decorations. Observing the exuberant side of the founder, the archival motifs revived for the Fall Winter 2024 Men’s collection re-emerge: the diamond-esque Monogram 72 is emblazoned across tailoring; a chandelier graphic transforms into a laminated lace dress with metallic drop pearls; and an archival cat hair motif is adapted in jacquard with lurex eye details in tailoring and a bustier dress, and in beading in a train dress and an evening coat. Inspired by an opera coat created by the founder, a caban is covered in wool fringing. Paillettes appear in velvet-covered manifestation on a plumed peacoat and in glossy form on dresses.

Informed by archival pieces and imagery, large-scale necklaces and bracelets take shape in crystal and enamel. Feline pendants grace necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings in metals and strass. The collection’s bow materialises in metals across earrings, rings and hair clips. It further adorns opera leather gloves and becomes the distinctive detail of the season’s shoe proposal where the bow graces pointed sling-back pumps and square-toed lace-up dance heels. The Maison’s Shark Lock boot manifests in an over-the-knee silhouette in satin. Embellished with crystals within the frame, the emblematic Giv Cut sunglasses manifest in a new mask interpretation.

Imitating the sensual lines of the collection, the Voyou family welcomes the P’tit Voyou, a new elongated shoulder bag with sleek minimal belt details in supple lambskin and patent leather. The classic Voyou shrinks to a Nano proportion crafted in calfskin as well as bow-strapped versions in velvet and satin. Honouring the archive, the Pumpkin bag is reimagined in soft crackled calfskin and as an evening pouch in velvet with chains and oversized ring details. The Antigona bag shape-shifts between cubic and augmented forms in croc-embossed or crackled leathers.
